Synopsis:

April Madness

We are bringing back our 10 Minute Madness event.

Here's how it works:

  • Do you have a process-related success story you'd like to share?

  • Do you have a process related horror story you'd like to share?

  • Are you looking for some help with a current process-related situation?

  • Perhaps you have another topic to suggest.

You will have exactly 10 minutes to make your presentation. That includes any questions and answers. Presentations will be timed. At the 10 minute mark, the timer (a volunteer from the audience) will stand up and start clapping and you must stop, even in mid-sentence. We then move on to the next speaker.

If you've been to one of these in the past, you know how much fun these are and how interesting these are because everyone has a different story.

If there is time at the end, we will open the floor for additional questions for any of the presenters.

We typically have around 4 - 5 presenters, but select more as backups, because sometimes stuff happens and someone can't make it at the last minute.

You have something you want to talk about, right? Then why not be one of the presenters? Don't be shy. It's only 10 minutes -- and we are a supportive group of folks.

So send your proposed topic and brief outline to AprilMadness@nyspin.org. Your submission will be evaluated. If clarification is needed, you will be contacted. If your submission makes it to the top 5, you will be invited to speak and will attend for free. If you are selected as an alternate and you end up giving a presentation, we'll create a special code for you to attend a future NY SPIN event for free. (That will be provided via email some time after the event.)

Please start sending your submissions now to AprilMadness@nyspin.org.

And whether you are a presenter or not:
  • Come for the information.
  • Come for the networking.
  • Come for the refreshments.
  • Come for the door prizes .

Synopsis:

Learning Agile
Agile has revolutionized the way teams approach software development, but with dozens of agile methodologies to choose from, the decision to "go agile" can be tricky. In their new book, Learning Agile, Andrew Stellman and Jennifer Greene help you sort it out, first by grounding you in agile’s underlying principles, then by describing four specific—and well-used—Agile methods: Scrum, extreme programming (XP), Lean, and Kanban.
Each method focuses on a different area of development, but they all aim to change your team’s mindset—from individuals who simply follow a plan, to a cohesive group that makes decisions together. Whether you are considering agile for the first time, or trying it again, you will learn how to choose a method that best fits your team and your company.
In this highly engaging talk, based on material in their book, Andrew and Jennifer show you how your team's mindset—the way that you and your team think about projects and practices—has a big impact on how effectively the team builds software. They show you how that mindset can make the difference between a team that's put good practices in place but has gotten only marginal improvement, versus a team that gets highly effective results from those very same practices.

Biographies:

Andrew Stellman is a developer, architect, speaker, agile coach, project manager, and expert in building better software. He has over two decades of professional experience building software, and has architected large-scale real-time back end systems, managed large international software teams, been a Vice President at a major investment bank, and consulted for companies, schools, and corporations, including Microsoft, the National Bureau of Economic Research, Bank of America, Notre Dame, and MIT. He's had the privilege of working with some pretty amazing programmers during that time, and likes to think that he's learned a few things from them.

Jennifer Greene is an agile coach, development manager, business analyst, project manager, tester, speaker, and authority on software engineering practices and principles. She's been building software for over twenty years in many different domains including media, finance, and IT consulting. She's worked with teams of excellent developers and testers to tackle tough technical problems and focused her career on finding and fixing the habitual process issues that crop up along the way.
